Photons are light particles that carry bundles of electromagnetic energy. The sun’s photons are vital to photosynthesis and many other chemical processes in nature. However, only photons between 400-700nm in the PAR spectrum affect photosynthesis. Some photons outside this spectrum do not affect plant growth at all, while others hinder plant optimization. LED grow lights are designed only to emit beneficial wavelengths for plant growth. This means that the light can be adjusted for optimal photosynthesis. All plants can be grown indoors, and most thrive better on vertical farms or greenhouses than outdoors. At Avisomo’s test farm, we’ve successfully cultivated herbs, lettuce, microgreens, and tomatoes in our modular plant growth systems. And the vertical farming plant selection is rapidly expanding. That said, some plants are better suited for indoor growth than others. Though most plants thrive indoors, the production/labor costs and space needed affects your return on investment differently. Local market demands vary, meaning we need to determine which plants are in demand in your area and how much you can sell. Indoor plant growth systems cost more than outdoor farming land or greenhouses, and the operating cost is higher. However, once a vertical farm is set up, the plant growth becomes more predictable and protected from climate and pests than any other cultivation type. This makes indoor farming exceptionally well-suited for automation, which is the key to turning big profits. On average, indoor cultivation costs 1200 EUR per m2, including all equipment for plant growth automation (software, plant recipes, lighting, irrigation, ventilation, nutrition control, and stacking/packing robotics).
